    **FOR SALE ☞**

Antique Black Forest-style carved wood wall barometer and Centigrade thermometer, circa 1880–1910, featuring elaborate foliate carving, naturally worm-marked timber, and a French-language aneroid barometer dial.

    **DESCRIPTION ☞**

An ornate antique wall-mounted barometer and thermometer, dating to approximately the late 19th or early 20th century, circa 1880–1910.

The elongated wooden case features elaborate pierced and relief carving, with large naturalistic leaves, curling stems, scrolling ornament, and deeply undercut foliate details surrounding the two instruments. The richly aged, dark brown wood incorporates numerous naturally occurring wormholes, lending the carving its distinctive rustic character.

The piece is attributed to the Black Forest tradition of European decorative woodcarving, associated with intricately carved domestic objects and naturalistic botanical ornament during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The precise workshop and country of manufacture are unknown.

The upper section houses a glass thermometer mounted against a metal plate engraved "CENTIGRADE," with a graduated Celsius scale from 0 to 50 degrees.

Below is a circular aneroid barometer with a cream-coloured French-language dial, convex glass cover, and aged metal bezel. The dial displays traditional weather indications, including TEMPÊTE (storm), PLUIE OU VENT (rain or wind), VARIABLE (changeable), BEAU TEMPS (fair weather), BEAU FIXE (settled fine weather), and TRÈS SEC (very dry).

The barometer incorporates a pressure-indicating needle and an adjustable reference pointer, traditionally used to compare atmospheric pressure readings over time.

The reverse retains metal hanging hardware and handwritten markings.

A substantial example of antique European decorative woodcarving, combining naturalistic ornament with the traditional domestic instruments used to observe weather and temperature.

    **DIMENSIONS ☞**

    Approximately:

    20¼ inches high (51.4 cm)

9½ inches wide (24.1 cm) at the widest point

2 inches deep (5.1 cm), measured from the back of the wooden case to the front of the projecting barometer.

    **CONDITION ☞**

Antique condition with age-related wear and imperfections consistent with its age and materials.

The carved wooden surround contains numerous old wormholes. The timber is understood to have been selected in an already worm-marked condition before carving, with the naturally occurring holes incorporated into the finished design. This material history has not been independently verified.

The elaborate carved and pierced decoration exhibits scattered small chips, losses, worn edges, surface scratches, marks, and variation in the aged dark finish.

The metal components exhibit tarnish, oxidation, spotting, and surface wear. The barometer glass, dial, and interior show age-related wear and accumulated debris.

The Centigrade thermometer responds readily to temperature changes and appears functional. The aneroid barometer does not presently function and is sold as-is. The adjustable reference pointer is loose and may shift when the piece is moved. No guarantee is made regarding the calibration or accuracy of either instrument.

An old deceased spider and webbing are visible inside the barometer mechanism, with webbing extending around portions of the mechanism and needle. It is unknown whether this contributes to the lack of movement. The mechanism has not been opened, cleaned, repaired, or professionally serviced.

The piece retains its aged appearance and has not been professionally restored.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Do you accept returns?

For EU & UK buyers: As required by consumer law, most online purchases can be cancelled within 14 days of delivery. Certain exceptions apply (antiques, collectibles, items sold “for parts/repair”). Buyer pays return shipping, and refunds are issued only after the item is received and verified in its original condition.

For buyers outside the EU/UK (e.g. USA, Canada): All sales are considered final. Returns are not accepted except in cases of significant misrepresentation.

    Do you accept exchanges?

No. All of our items are considered one-offs and unique so we can not offer exchanges at this time.

Will I have to pay extra customs or duty fees if I’m in the U.S.?

We ship all U.S. orders using the most reliable method available. Some items (especially antiques over 100 years old or U.S.-made goods) are tariff-exempt under current rules. For other items, we do our best to pre-pay duties and include them in the price (known as DDP — Delivered Duty Paid) so what you see at checkout is what you’ll pay.

    What does “DDP” mean?

DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid. It means we take care of the customs paperwork and fees on our end whenever possible. That way, your package clears the border smoothly and you won’t get a surprise bill on delivery.

    Are there any exceptions?

Most antiques and U.S.-made vintage items ship duty-free. European pieces are usually covered by DDP (we pre-pay the duty and build it into the price). Canadian-made vintage can sometimes carry higher tariffs; in those rare cases, we’ll either adjust the listing price to reflect the duty or let you know up front if extra charges could apply. If you have any concerns regarding tariffs, please message us prior to purchase and we would be happy to do some research for you!

What happens if customs does charge extra?

We’re transparent about this from the start: buyers are responsible for any customs/import fees that may apply. That said, we always do our best to minimize the risk by using the right codes and carriers. If you have questions about a specific item, message us before checkout and we’ll give you an honest answer about what to expect.

Why do some Canadian shops say “buyer is responsible for duty”?

That’s Etsy’s default policy. We go a step further by explaining how duties work and when we can cover them. Our goal is to make your buying experience smooth and surprise-free.
