FOR SALE ☞ An early Stanley No. 45 Type 6 combination woodworking plane with 20 cutters, four rods, adjustable components, period screwdriver and original finger-jointed wooden storage box.
DESCRIPTION ☞ This is an antique Stanley Rule & Level Co. No. 45 combination plane, believed to be a Type 6 example dating to approximately 1895–1896.
The plane is marked “No. 45” and bears the March 11, 1884 and January 22, 1895 patent dates. It has a nickel-plated cast-metal body with ornate floral decoration, a shaped wooden rear handle, wooden front knob and a wood-faced adjustable fence.
The No. 45 was designed as an adaptable woodworking tool capable of cutting grooves, beads, rabbets, dadoes, tongue-and-groove joints and other profiles by changing its cutters and adjusting the fence, stops and sliding section.
This set includes:
• Main plane stock with wooden handle
• Sliding section and adjustable fence
• 20 assorted cutters
• Four metal rods
• Adjustable stops and scoring components
• Wooden-handled screwdriver
• Original finger-jointed wooden storage box
• Original cutter-holding board
• Additional components shown in the photographs
The set appears to correspond closely with the original equipment supplied with the Type 6 version. The original instruction sheet is not present. Please rely upon the photographs for the exact components included.
The original box retains portions of two green printed paper labels. The end label identifies the contents as a Stanley patent improved adjustable plow and beading plane manufactured by Stanley Rule & Level Co. of New Britain, Connecticut. The inner cutter-board label includes an illustrated plane and cutter diagram.
Several wooden components bear an earlier owner’s stamped name or initials, adding evidence of the tool’s long working history.
DIMENSIONS ☞ The assembled plane measures approximately 10 1/2 inches long by 5 1/2 inches high. Its overall width and depth vary according to the placement of the rods and adjustable fence.
CONDITION ☞ This antique woodworking set appears to have been gently used for its intended purpose and remains in good overall condition for its age and prior usage.
The metal components show expected surface wear, light oxidation, tarnish, slight scratches and areas of plating wear. The wooden handle, knob and fence retain a warm aged finish with scattered marks, small dents and former-owner stamps.
The cutters show evidence of prior use, along with some surface staining and oxidation. The original wooden box has scratches, scuffs, edge wear and wear around the finger-jointed corners. Both original paper labels have considerable age-related flaking and surface loss, though portions of the printed wording and illustrations remain visible.
This complete antique set is offered here as shown, with the components pictured included.
The threaded adjustments and moving components have not been tested through every possible configuration. The set is sold exactly as photographed. Please see photos.
