FOR SALE ☞ Vintage circa-1960s Hollóháza hand-painted porcelain woman with ball figurine, featuring an elegant Art Deco-influenced bathing-beauty design.
DESCRIPTION ☞ This striking vintage porcelain figure was produced by Hollóháza in Hungary, most likely during the 1960s.
The figure depicts a poised young sportswoman standing with one hand resting confidently at her hip and the other holding a pale blue ball. She wears a fitted yellow one-piece athletic or bathing costume decorated with narrow black vertical stripes.
Her elongated neck and limbs, streamlined silhouette, sleek swept-back hairstyle, arched brows and finely painted red lips strongly recall the fashionable bathing beauties and athletic women depicted in the decorative arts and travel posters of the 1920s and 1930s. Although produced later, the figure has a pronounced Art Deco influence that gives her a much earlier appearance.
Hollóháza traces its manufacturing history to 1777, when the predecessor of the present manufactory was established as a glassmaking workshop on the Károlyi family estate in northern Hungary. Production changed to stoneware in 1831. The factory was nationalized in 1948, porcelain production began in 1957, and decorative dishes and ornaments returned to production during the early 1960s. Hollóháza now describes itself as one of Hungary’s oldest continuously operating factories.
The underside bears the green Hollóháza tree factory mark together with the words “Kézzel Festett,” Hungarian for “hand painted.” The tree mark is generally associated with the period from 1949 to 1970.
Also present beneath the base are the faint impressed model or form number 6108, a worn blue rectangular workshop stamp and a handwritten number 17.
A distinctive addition to a collection of Hungarian porcelain, Art Deco-influenced decor, vintage female athlete figures or European figurative sculpture.
DIMENSIONS ☞ Approximately:
26 cm tall × 9 cm wide × 6.5 cm deep
10¼ inches tall × 3½ inches wide × 2½ inches deep
CONDITION ☞ Very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks or repairs were observed. The porcelain remains glossy, and the painted yellow, black, blue, grey and facial details remain clear and attractive.
There are a few tiny dark specks and light surface marks, minor irregularities within the hand-painted decoration, and light rubbing and residue along the underside of the base. The marks beneath the base show normal age-related wear.
Please examine all photographs closely, as they form an important part of the condition description.
