FOR SALE ☞ 18th-century French military engraving titled Fusiliers de Montagne, housed in a late 19th to early 20th century black wooden frame with later matting.

DESCRIPTION ☞
Antique French military engraving titled “Fusiliers de Montagne,” depicting a uniformed mountain fusilier standing with long firearm, pistols, cloak, tricorn-style hat, and period military dress.

The lower margin identifies the work as “P. B. de la Rue del.” at lower left and “P. Aveline Sculp.” at lower right. The title appears in large script beneath the image, with French descriptive text referring to a corps raised in Roussillon by ordinance of February 12, 1744. The lower text also includes “Avec Privilège du Roy” and plate number 6.

This is an 18th-century French intaglio engraving on antique laid paper, with visible engraved line work, fine crosshatching, age toning, and a plate impression around the image and text area. It belongs to a known mid-18th-century French military costume series after P. B. de la Rue, with individual plates engraved by different engravers.

The print is housed in a late 19th to early 20th century black wooden frame with later black matting/backing. The back has been opened for inspection, and the print appears to be gently secured at the top with archival-style tape. The framing appears to have been updated later than the print while preserving the antique presentation.

A strong historical piece for collectors of French military history, antique engravings, European prints, uniform studies, 18th-century military imagery, or traditional historical wall decor.

Identification and dating are based on the visible title, artist and engraver marks, plate number, paper appearance, plate impression, intaglio line work, and comparison with a related plate from the same French military engraving series.

CONDITION ☞
Good antique display condition with age-related wear.

The engraving shows overall paper toning, scattered foxing/discoloration, small spots, minor surface marks, and age-darkening consistent with an 18th-century paper print. The engraved image remains clear, with fine visible line work and crosshatching. A plate impression/border is visible around the image and text area.

The black wooden frame appears late 19th to early 20th century and shows age-related surface wear, scuffs, small chips, finish loss, and general handling marks. The black matting/backing appears to be a later framing update. The print appears to be gently attached at the top with archival-style tape. There may be glare, dust, and reflections visible in the photos due to the glass.
