DESCRIPTION ☞
Authentic 1912 Canadian mountaineering guidebook by Arthur Oliver Wheeler, co-founder and first president of the Alpine Club of Canada, with Elizabeth Parker of Winnipeg. Published by Stovel Company, this scarce field guide documented the earliest climbs and surveys of the Selkirk Range in British Columbia.
This is a complete first-edition copy, verified against archival records. It includes all required fold-outs and plates:
Fold-out panorama “Panorama from Mt. Abbott”
Topographical map “Part of the Selkirk Range, British Columbia (adjacent to the Canadian Pacific Railway)” (surveyed 1901–02)
Topographical map “Dogtooth Mountains in the Railway Belt of British Columbia” (surveyed 1907)
Scientific plate “Tongue and Moraines of the Illecillewaet Glacier, British Columbia” (Vaux, 1906)
Frontispiece portrait of A.O. Wheeler
Numerous in-text photographs and diagrams of early Canadian alpine expeditions
A fascinating artifact from the dawn of organized Canadian mountaineering and cartography. The fold-out maps are printed with extraordinary detail, showing contour lines, survey stations, and glacier movement data from the early 1900s.
Ideal for collectors of Canadian Pacific Railway, mountaineering history, or British Columbia exploration. Rare to find in such complete condition.
