FOR SALE ☞ 1954 Trans-Canada Airlines Crash Cover

DESCRIPTION ☞ Recovered letter from the Moose Jaw plane crash in 1954. Addressed to "Spencer & Grierson Ltd. Insurance Agents, 301 Northern Hardware Bldg. Edmonton, Alta." From the Western Canada Insurance Underwriters Association in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Envelope is open and very delicate! An additional letter from the Assistant District Director of Postal Services in Edmonton accompanies the damaged letter to let the intended recipients know what happened to their mail.

"On the clear spring morning of Thursday, April 8th 1954, over the small city of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, a Canadian C-4 North Star flown by Trans-Canada Airlines and a Royal Canadian Air Force Harvard trainer collided mid-air. Thirty-seven people died in the Moose Jaw crash, including 31 passengers and for TCA crew members, the student pilot of the Harvard, and one woman on the ground. It was the worst aviation accident in Canada up until that time.

The North Star was carrying more than 454 kilos (or 1,000 lbs) of mail destined for Vancouver and points beyond. Much of it was destroyed or damaged by fire and water. Pieces of mail that have been damaged in aviation, rail and shipping disasters are classified by philatelists as 'adversity mail.' Individual envelopes (called "covers") resulting from aircraft accidents are called 'crash covers.'

This is a letter recovered from the Moose Jaw crash site and as some would consider, a piece of Canadian aviation history."
