FOR SALE ☞ Authentic Antique Beaver Felt Top Hat by Tress & Co. London

DESCRIPTION ☞ A beautiful example of Edwardian style! Size 7, black top hat in beaver felt. The felt has a gorgeous sheen, soft to the touch. Inside you can see the silk is basically new, no sweat stains, rips or tears. Label reads "Tress & Co. London -- Made Expressly for Jess Applegath Toronto Montreal"

Underneath the logo is a golden-colored monogram "AJC". We have been told by an expert that the monogram would be true gold lettering in keeping with the time period, however we have not tested it at this time.

**Please note** This is not a true modern size 7, as sizes were smaller back then! Please MESSAGE US prior to purchase with your own measurements if you plan to wear it. This is to ensure hat will fit you and to verify that you understand we are not responsible if it does not fit you upon delivery. We understand that this is an investment purchase, so feel free to message us if you have any questions or would like to see more photos! We cannot accept refunds or exchanges on this hat once sold and shipped.

Tress & Co. was a well known hat manufacturer in London, England. In operation for over one hundred years, it was established in 1846 and finally sold to Christy’s in 1953.

"Applegath Hats was, at one time, Toronto’s largest haberdasher. The business was begun by Llewellyn John Applegath as an adjunct business within the men’s clothier House of Hobberlin, at the corner of Richmond and Yonge streets, when Hobberlin was founded in 1885. By 1913 Applegath had become so large a second store opened further up on Yonge street, two more stores followed in later years. The company’s peak year of sales was 1946, but then a decline in sales set in as more men began going hatless. Stores were closed in 1954, 1960, and 1962. The final store was closed in July 1964 by Harold Applegath, grandson of the founder." - from Kickshawproductions.com

Jess Applegath was the one Applegath sons who struck out on his own sometime in the early 1900s. He had his own stores in Toronto and Montreal. All Applegath stores in Canada were closed prior to 1967.
